History of Cartier Timepieces

Louis-Francois Cartier began the Cartier brand in 1847 under the apprenticeship of Adophe Picard in Paris. The first of the Cartier watches was sold to Princess Mathilde, who was the niece of Napolean I. Later, Empress Eugenie became a customer after being impressed by his designs. By 1888, his designs evolved to include the first bracelet watch for ladies.

By 1899, he opened 13, Rue de la Paix. This store brought in aristocrats from around the world to experience the interesting timepieces. Soon, he moved to England to sell his timepieces to kings. He was the supplier to King Edward VII and King Alfonso XIII of Spain. He also created a leather strap at the request of his friend in aviation, Alberto Santos-Dumont.

In 1906, Cartier created the precursor to Art Deco jewelry. He produced many geometric designs during this time. He later secured a contract and became the official supplier of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. In the early 1900s, not only did he open another boutique in London, he also opened his first boutique in America in New York City.
